Stepping Forward Bristol

The best way to get out and about in the community if you live in Bristol is to join our Stepping Forward Day Opportunities Service.

Stepping Forward Day Opportunities

Stepping Forward go on a boat trip

The service runs on weekdays in South Bristol. It is not based in one place but enables participants to go out and about, becoming more independent and involved with the local community.

The aim of the service is to increase social inclusion, enable people to increase their social skills and develop new relationships within their local area.

Staff work on a 1:3 basis, supporting people to work towards their own goals, whatever they may be.

There is a strong focus on the person as an individual and staff are committed to person-centered planning, which we believe is central in developing people's capacity to make their own lifestyle choices. Past activities have included:

  • Attending cookery courses

  • Attending computer class

  • Finding and keeping a job

  • Attending college

  • Going to the gym

The service supports people with learning disabilities to use services and join local community groups that the rest of the public also access.

Achievements

There are currently 12 members of the Stepping Forward South Bristol Day Opportunities group. Many have been empowered to achieve amazing things since joining the group.

Literacy

Some people are now attending literacy classes and learning to write their name for the first time

Employment

One service user has been supported to find employment at a toddler group, a job she always wanted to do. This has also enabled her to decrease the amount of support she needs from the group and to become increasingly independent.

Stepping Forward's silent film

Members of Stepping Forward have created their own silent film as part of Expressions. The movie - which was filmed in Redcatch Park - highlights the importance of inclusion and getting along with one another.

A healthier lifestyle

Two other members have amazed family and friends with their weight loss, losing over six stones between them by attending the gym and eating healthier meals.

"Since joining the group I have lost over three stone, and now I go to the gym"

Chris, Stepping Forward

Their determination has encouraged the rest of the Stepping Forward group to also find and access healthy activities within their community.

Staff have supported people to make Health Action Plans and many have started to attend community dance classes, healthy eating cookery classes and to access the local gym.

Ultimately, the Stepping Forward South Bristol Day Opportunities group is continuing to help people to acheive their chosen lifestyle.

Leading the way in access and integration with the community is our Stepping Forward Day Opportunities Service.

"I've done loads of training like first aid, literacy and food hygiene and got certificates. It was the proper training, same as my staff do. My support workers got me the training days and then I got a new job 'cause of my training."

Clare Emmett, service user of Stepping Forward Bristol.
