Meet the Neighbours at the Chestnuts, 9 Lodge Road, Yate!
The Chestnuts – a care home in Yate for eight people who live with learning disabilities – is holding a ‘meet the neighbours fun afternoon’ on Friday, 10th April, culminating in the release of 1,000 balloons.
Kay Spray, Manager at the Chestnuts, said:
“We’re raising money to install a ‘Snoezelen’ in our garden – a specially adapted ‘log cabin’ with lots of sensory equipment which has been shown to reduce stress amongst those living with learning disabilities.
Everyone’s welcome on the 10th – we’ll be serving teas and cakes and for a donation of just £2 we’ll release a balloon. The person whose balloon travels the furthest distance will win a Spring hamper complete with bottle of champagne!
The Chestnuts can be a challenging place to work but it’s also a place with lots of fun, laughter and a lovely place to call home.”
The fun afternoon starts at 2pm and the balloon release is scheduled for 3pm. Entrance is free although all donations during the afternoon will go towards the Chestnut’s ‘Snoezelen’ project.

International Day of Disabled Person (aims to promote an understanding of disability issues and mobilize support for the dignity, rights and well-being of persons with disabilities).
Members of Milestones staff are invited to bring their children/ grandchildren/nieces & nephews to a childrens Christmas party taking place on 9th December from 4.30pm to 7.00pm at Cleve Rugby Club. Russell House in Almondsbury have invited their neighbours to an open afternoon between 2pm and 4pm on 15th November to visit their home. Also, weather permitting, to take part in a mass planting of daffodil bulbs where free tea and cakes will be served.

Milestones Trust will be holding and OPEN DAY for a new service that offers a time-limited tenancy, to help people with mental health needs develop skills to be able to move on.

Milestones Learning Disability Service User Conference: 25th June 2008
Learning Disabilities week 15th - 21st June (Aims to raise awareness of the issues faced by people with learning disabilities. The event also supports families and carers of people with learning disabilities).
May 2008
MIND week 10th - 17th May (focussing on how mental health can affect your finances and how finances can affect your mental health).
27th May - One of the service users from Milestones Trust, Russell House in Almondsbury will be doing a sponsored walk into Bristol Centre (approximately 9 miles) to raise money for "amani" - a charity working to help street children in Africa (as he is in a wheelchair he will be assisted by two staff members).
