Short Breaks

Milestones Trust manages two respite care homes, providing short breaks for people with learning disabilities and enabling carers to take a break from their role.

"Often, because people live at home in very quiet environments, they find the group environment of the home very stimulating."

Tracey, Support Worker, Stibbs House.

The service, based at Stibbs House in St George and Fairburn in Little Stoke, provides support away from home for stays of between one night and one month.

The homes can also provide emergency care in crisis situations, and male or female-only short breaks if preferred.

A home from home

For many guests, the short break may be the first time they spend time away from home. To ensure guests feel comfortable the homes maintain the continuity of the person's everyday life, enabling them to continue with their daily routines, for example going to college or to a day care centre.

The homely atmosphere in both Stibbs House and Fairburn provides a safe and relaxing environment. Guests are encouraged to take part in activities such as fruit picking, baking and arts and crafts. Day trips out to local attractions are also organised to suit guests' preferences.
