Emma, a Student Mental Health Nurse studying in her second year at UWE, experienced her 3rd Placement with Milestones Trust’s Supported Living team. Here’s what she had to say about her experience:
“From day one at Milestones Supported Living, I was instantly made to feel like part of the team. Everyone made me feel welcome from the staff to the service users.
My mentor Jackie was organised on a weekly basis with my timetable and was able to facilitate weekly meetings whereby I could reflect on my experiences and any feedback I had. Jackie was organised in making opportunities for me to spend time with other teams (learning disabilities) and other patches (Wells Road). This allowed me to be more independent and venture away from this patch and put the skills I had learned from this team and adapt to another team. Jackie was supportive in every way and I was able to go to her to tell her anything.
I enjoyed the placement as a whole: Jackie and the entire staff team were supportive in every aspect of my learning. They each supported me as I was shadowing them and they gave feedback to my mentor and I on areas where I had developed and grown as the weeks had gone on and where I could reach my other competencies. They enabled me to be independent in my thinking and allowed me to grow confidence in the community; by demonstrating to me their effectiveness and skills in their own work ethic.
They treated every individual with respect and dignity and made me feel a part of the team instantly alongside the service users. I will take many aspects of my learning from this placement onto my future career and am very thankful for the multiple learning outcomes and opportunities I have been given here.”
