Nick’s new found love of holidays

Nick and Judy's story

It is such a joy to work for Milestones Trust as we are encouraged to stretch ourselves and those we care for, to achieve things that were thought impossible. We look forward to many more holidays together.

Judy

Nick experiences a range of anxiety-based challenges when taking on new experiences, until last year, when we managed to go away for one night. Nick could not go on holiday even for a night away, but by gently teaching him to manage to enjoy things he has never had the chance to enjoy before; we eventually supported him to get to a point where we could go away on holiday.

Nick has now been on three holidays. He is now comfortable that he can go on holiday and will return safely to his house. First, we went to Weymouth last year for one night, close to the sea. That’s when I realised that Nick likes the sea, and really enjoys the waves. After Weymouth, Nick has been asking to go to lots of places including Jersey. So, this year we have been to Bournemouth and Torquay. Torquay was truly a wonderful holiday. As well as enjoying Torquay, we visited the model village, and spent a lovely day walking around Paignton harbour.

The holidays were a success because we supported Nick to take the lead in planning and making decisions about where to go and how we get there. I also carried out a full risk assessment on potential stress triggers, particularly crowds and a lack of planning, as Nick finds uncertainty worrying. We planned carefully how to get to the train, made sure he had eaten well before travelling, and assessed what support we needed when boarding, including the personal assistant at the train station. On the long journey, we booked the seats so Nick had no worries about where to sit. Our seats were in a carriage that was not too noisy, close to the toilet so he was not anxious about going there, and where he could see his luggage.

Throughout the holiday, Nick had his things he finds comforting easily to hand and help was there, just in case his anxiety began to be a problem. We went where he wanted and I worked hard to enable him to feel welcome at the hotel and restaurants and enjoyed watching him gain confidence in these environments. I wanted him to feel safe all the time with his care, so I made sure that we did everything the same and agreed about what we would do together, so he knew that everything was safe, because I was doing it too.

It is such a joy to work for Milestones Trust as we are encouraged to stretch ourselves and those we care for, to achieve things that were thought impossible. We look forward to many more holidays together.
