Stepping Forward South Glos

Leading the way in access and integration with the local community is our Stepping Forward South Gloucestershire Day Opportunities Service.


Out and about in the bus

The service runs on weekdays and some weekends in South Gloucestershire. The group is based at Warmley and Kingswood Community Centres but participants go out and about in the community, taking part in activities across Bristol.


These are built around service users' interests and their personal goals. Each member of the group has a choice of activities to take part in.

These include

  • sport

  • sewing

  • life skills

  • gourmet group

  • skittles

  • bus buddying

  • zumba

  • golf

  • drama

  • pilates

  • literacy

The group are an established part of their community and are well-known locally. Many businesses in the area have donated skills, time and money to them.

Encouraging Independence

Many members of the Stepping Forward South Gloucestershire group have achieved huge milestones since joining. Several service users have gained jobs at local businesses including nurseries and an estate agents.

One service user has learned to write her name and another, who would not talk when he joined the group, has now grown in confidence enough to talk freely with staff and even to perform in a show. Three members of the group have recently moved into their own homes to live independently.

The Stepping Forward South Gloucestershire group often get involved with Expressions, the Trust's programme of arts workshops, mentoring, exhibitions and creative reading.

Over the years the group have put on a fashion show, taken part in a Wicked Wardrobe workshop and this year will be performing a dance at the arts festival.


At present 15 service users attend the group and feedback from relatives of those who attend is universally positive.

Staff work on a 1-3 core basis and also cover 1-1 hours, often using this time to support people to move into employment or take on a college course.

The staff have remained constant since the group began over two years ago, resulting in both staff and service users knowing each other very well.
