A safe place to cycle

Lucy's story

There aren’t enough safe cycling areas for people with disabilities and special needs. Warmley Wheelers is brilliant because it provides that.

Lucy, Carmela's Mum

Carmela is my seven-year-old daughter. She has a rare health condition called LMNA-related congenital muscular dystrophy, which causes her muscles to progressively weaken as she gets older. Currently she can walk, but not for a long time. She needs help getting up and down stairs and on and off seats.

We buy disability equipment for Carmela to keep her active, happy and motivated. Unfortunately, a lot of this equipment is very expensive. We recently decided to buy a new bicycle that Carmela and I could ride together on long cycles, however it was difficult to know what type of bikes might be suitable without being able to try them first. Fortunately, a Google search led us to Warmley Wheelers.

We came to Warmley Wheelers on a lovely, sunny day and we had a brilliant time. The team were so helpful and knowledgeable, and they were happy to do anything they could to make sure that Carmela was comfortable. We were able to try a few different bikes and ride them on an off-road forest trail, which was lovely and felt very safe.

Our trip to Warmley Wheelers helped us to narrow down the type of bicycle we were considering. Carmela can still pedal but she hasn’t got the strength to power a bike by herself, so we’ve bought a lightweight tandem and added some adaptive equipment to it to make it suitable for her. We’ve just had it delivered today and we’re looking forward to going out for a nice bike ride soon.

There aren’t enough safe cycling areas for people with disabilities and special needs. Warmley Wheelers is brilliant because it provides that and it’s for everyone. There is a really good range of bicycles – ones for little children, for elderly people and for people who can’t pedal.

We’ll definitely come back to Warmley Wheelers for a day out over the summer and we’ll bring Carmela’s new bike with us. We live about an hour away but we will come to Warmley Wheelers because we know that it’s a place where we can cycle together safely as a family.
