Qamar Khan, the Trust’s Director of Estates, Facilities and IT recently completed a month-long cycling challenge. Over August Qamar cycled 404 kilometres which took 22 hours and 47 minutes. The distance travelled is the equivalent to a straight-line flight from Bristol to Newcastle!

Qamar undertook the project to celebrate our ruby anniversary and to raise money for Warmley Wheelers, a community project run by the Trust dedicated to breaking down barriers to cycling for people with disabilities. Based next to the Warmley Waiting Rooms café on the Bristol to Bath Cycle Track, the team offer a range of adapted cycles that allow anyone who would find it difficult to ride a classic bicycle to enjoy the fresh air, joy and exercise that cycling can bring.

Qamar has already raised almost £300 for the project saying “it was an incredible experience and a really great opportunity to contribute to the Trust’s 40^th anniversary celebrations and give a small contribution to Warmley Wheelers. I want to say thank you to everyone who donated”.

Qamar maintained an average speed of between 12 and 13 mph throughout the challenge. He said the most difficult part was fitting the rides around his schedule, particularly after becoming ill and having to make up two weeks’ worth of cycling in the final week.

Reflecting on the experience, Qamar said: “For me, this wasn’t about performance or personal records, but about completing the challenge.”
