Sharing knowledge and skills
Volunteering's story
Having the training aimed at my individual needs has really helped my confidence in using the computer
In October, a team of 6 individuals from Lloyds Banking, led by Laura Stimpson, mentored 12 members of Milestones Trust staff in IT skills. This new venture for us came about when teams, such as Lloyds, approached us looking for volunteer opportunities which used their business skills.
After consulting with staff, the pilot day focused on basic level Microsoft Word skills plus the use of email, Outlook and calendars. Working with one Lloyds mentor to two staff allowed people to learn at their own pace and the atmosphere was relaxed, friendly and non-judgemental. Every person from the day strongly agreed that they would recommend this sort of training to colleagues.
Here is what the learners had to say about the day:
“Having the training aimed at my individual needs has really helped my confidence in using the computer”
“I will now save documents in Word, rather than paper copies”
“Being able to learn at my own pace was very helpful”
“The trainers were very patient and didn’t make me feel awkward at all”
“The training was clear and understandable”
The trainers from Lloyds were amazing. They were very approachable, knowledgeable and kept the learning relevant and fun. The success of this pilot session has led to us to design further IT modules for Intermediate Word and Excel, plus administrative tasks using spreadsheets, Assessnet and remote and secure servers. These will be in the New Year and details will be sent to corporate teams and home/project managers shortly. So, keep your eyes peeled!
